Day 24 of 40 Day United States of Autism Movie Shoot

written by - 3 Comments

We arrived in Orlando. Florida today to visit with Tunde Brazlik and her children, Safiyya and Amin. What a reception! You should see the signs the kids spent hours putting together welcoming us to their home. It was so refreshing after our long days recently.

Tonight we set up the interview with Tunde, and what a story she had to tell. As a Muslim in America, she has many of the same issues that all parents face, plus the challenges dealing with a community that has not embraced autism. She broke my heart talking about how once when her son had cardiac arrests and was dying in her home, she performed CPR and went to the hospital. There, the doctor said it probably would have been better for her not to revived him because of his condition. With tears in her eyes, she talked of the challenge it brought to her faith and her belief in peaceful actions. The more we heard, the more obvious it became how brave she was for her her family.

Afterwards, each person in the crew received a gift with their name on it, filled with items the children had spent days preparing. It was indescribable to reflect on the generosity and love they’ve shown to our crew in the short time we’ve been with them. We look forward to sharing more of their story with you, as well as finishing the shoot tomorrow.

Be sure to check out the great pictures! We love you all and can’t wait to hear from you soon!

What a beautiful, sweet family…..I’m touched by just the little that I have read. I cannot wait to see them in the film. It’s really an amazing thing to hear of the different challenges that parents of children with autism face, and the challenges that the children themselves deal with! What a heartbreaker; yet what an inspiring thing to see what Tunde is doing despite all the set backs!
